The Vanishing Book Fair
A Supergirl “Jemie” Adventure

Hard cover, paperbacks, pop-ups and picture books! All had vanished! The bewildered students stared at empty bookcases everywhere. “This year's book fair is a disaster!” said a small child. Suddenly, a shiny speck on a book shelf caught Jemie's eye. She reached into her backpack and pulled out her grandpa's trusty old spyglass. He had given it to her for her 10th birthday and said it always helped him detect even the smallest of clues. She looked very closely at the shiny speck and then another and another until she had inspected every square inch of the shelves. She immediately began to piece the mystery together. “This isn't an ordinary thief,” she explained to the worried students. “In fact, we all know him well. My trusty spyglass has detected sand all over these shelves which can only lead to one suspect.  He's perfectly harmless, I tell you. But, if we want to get our books back and save this book fair, we'll have to wait until tonight to make our move.”

Later that evening, the students united and followed Jemie and her spyglass to the perpetrator's lair. “We know you're in there Mister Sandman!” Jemie called out. “We are here to demand our books back!” “Oh my sleepy stars”, sobbed Mister Sandman. “I am very sorry to have taken your books. It's just that night after night these precious children are read a wonderful story before I help them off to sleep. So, when I couldn't fall asleep myself, I took your books. I thought if I read all of those wonderful stories, I could finally get some sleep. I didn't mean to ruin your book fair.” Jemie approached him slowly and took a book from his hands. She opened the book and began to read it to him. The children gathered alongside Jemie and all took turns reading their favorite book aloud. As each child finished their book, Mister Sandman grew sleepier and sleepier. Alas, with a big yawn he said, “I promise to return your books in the morning. Thank you all for reading so beautifully, and may your school have the best book fair it's ever had.”

The following day, the book fair was a smashing success. Not a speck of sand to be found on any shelf, only amazing stories and tales just waiting to be read by each and every student.

Now this is where to come to find adventure!” exclaimed Jemie.
